Today in history - August 19, 1973

On August 19, 1973  France performs nuclear test at two islands: French Polynesia and Mururoa. France was one of the nuclear pioneers and was the fourth nation to join the “Nuclear Club”. French Polynesia and Mururoa were chosen with the argument for the selection being t hat only 5000 inhabitans lived within and they are mostly uninhabited. However, 60 inhabitants were only 100 km away from Mururoa.

Then 193 atmospheric and underground tests were conducted in the region over the next 30 years.
