Japan declares war on Germany, World War I
Today in history - August 23, 1990

The Declaration of Independence of Armenia was signed on August 23, 1990 in Yerevan, Armenia. The Deceleration was signed by Armenian's president Levon Ter-Petrossian and Supreme Council of Armenia secretary Ara Sahakian.

The Republic of Armenia was established upon dissolution of the Soviet Union. The declaration was rooted in the December 1, 1989, joint decision of the Armenian SSR Supreme Council and the Artsakh National Council on the "Reunification of the Armenian SSR.

Armenia became the Republic of Armenia. On September 21, 1991 Armenia became an independent nation.

Today in history - August 23, 1914

Japan was not a major actor during the World War I but it did play a remarkable role. On August 23, 1914, the government of Japan sends an ultimatum to Germany, demanding the removal of all German ships from Japanese and Chinese waters and the surrender of control of Tsingtao - the location of Germany’s largest overseas naval bases, located on China’s Shantung Peninsula.

As Vienna refused to withdraw the Austro-Hungarian cruiser, Japan declared a war on Austria-Hungary too, on 25 August 1914.

Japan’s aggressive actions against China and quick economic expansion during World War I - while the great powers of Europe were occupied elsewhere - would have far-reaching effects over the course of the 20th century.
