Today in history - November 25, 1867

Dynamite is an explosive material based on nitroglycerin, using diatomaceous earth, or another adsorbent substance such as powdered shells or clay. Dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel and was the first safely manageable explosive stronger than black powder.

Nobel held 350 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. His fortune was used posthumously to institute the Nobel Prizes. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. His name also survives in modern-day companies such as Dynamit Nobel and AkzoNobel, which are descendants of mergers with companies Nobel himself established.
