Columbus discovers Dominica - 03.11.1493
Today in history - November 3, 1493

Dominica is situated between Guadaloupe and Martinique of the Leeward islands, is in the Caribbean Sea. When Christopher Columbus 'discovered' the island of Dominica on Sunday, November 3, 1493, he and the rest of his crew met a group of people already living there. From 1627 both the French and the British fought to try and gain control of the island. This power struggle continued until 1978. The island then gained it's independence and became known officially as 'The Commonwealth of Dominica'.

Many of the people living in Dominica today are the descendants of these African people. The island of Dominica is often referred to as 'The Nature Isle Of The Caribbean' or simply 'The Nature Island'. This is due to the beautiful and unspoilt scenery that beckons people from all over the world to the shores of Dominica.
